The eighth grade program at St. Fabian Catholic School follows the standards of the Archdiocese of Detroit. The program is designed to meet the spiritual, social, emotional, academic and physical needs of the child. All core classes and special subjects, such as physical education, Spanish, music, media, computers, and art, are taught by teachers who specialize in those areas.
Religion
Over the course of the year, the 8th grade will focus on the development of the church from Christ to the present day, the catholic social justice teachings, and being a disciple of the church. The primary textbook is the Breakthrough Bible! from St. Mary’s Press and the Decision Point program from Dynamic Catholic.
Math
Over the course of eighth grade, we will be using EnVision Math 2.0. This year we will be visiting topics such real numbers, solving equations, systems of linear equations, functions, bivariate data, and geometry.
Science
Eighth graders will be learning life science through FOSS. Life science explores the living aspects of Earth. The topics covered in this class are cells, cell processes, genetics, ecology, anatomy, and physiology. Students will have the opportunity to dissect frogs at the end of the year following our anatomy and physiology exploration.
Social Studies
Over the course of the eighth grade we will be using Oakland School's MAISA and a supplement of Catholic Textbook Project’s Light to the Nations. This year we will be using the five themes of geography (location, place, human-environment interaction, movement, and region) to study the history of The United States of America; with special emphasis placed on the founding of the nation and The American Civil War. Additionally, each day as a class we will view and discuss CNN 10 (formally CNN Student News) to keep up to date with daily current events. Each student will research a national issue of public policy and take a position. Students will then compose a persuasive essay justifying the position with a reasoned argument and develop an action plan to address or inform others about the issue.
English
In eighth grade, the text used is Warriner’s Handbook Course by Holt. Throughout the year, students will cover the conventions of standard English such sentence diagramming with modifiers, verbal, compound, and complex sentences, form and use verbs in active and passive voice, form and use verbs in mood and verb voice. Students will produce various types of writing such as arguments to support claims with clear reasons and evidence, informative texts with thesis statement, narrative pieces, historical expository piece, and personal experience essay.
Literature
Over the course of eighth grade, we will be using Glencoe’s Literature: The Reader’s Choice book, course 3; as well as The Pearl, The Outsiders, The Lions of Little Rock and the play The Diary of Anne Frank. This year we will be visiting topics such as the elements of historical fiction, literary devices, and how to analyze a story, poem, or nonfiction text, as well as comparing literature. Students will continue with creative writing and literary analysis essays. Each student also completes six independent reading books and studies.
