The sixth grade program at St. Fabian Catholic School follows the standards of the Archdiocese of Detroit. The program is designed to meet the spiritual, social, emotional, academic and physical needs of the child. All core classes and special subjects, such as physical education, Spanish, music, media, computers, and art, are taught by teachers who specialize in those areas.
Religion
Over the course of the year, the 6th grade will focus on the Old Testament salvation history and how it is preparing us for the incarnation of Jesus. The primary textbook is the Break Through! Bible from St. Mary’s Press with other supplementary materials.
Math
Over the course of sixth grade, we will be using EnVision Math 2.0. This year we will be visiting topics such as fraction and decimal operations, integers, algebraic expressions, solving equations, ratios, percentages, and geometry.
Science
Sixth graders will be learning earth science with FOSS. Earth science explores the earth and its atmosphere. The topics covered in this class include earth history, plate tectonics, the rock cycle, volcanoes, earthquakes, and astronomy.
Social Studies
Over the course of the sixth grade we will be using Catholic Textbook Project’s All Ye Lands. This year we will be using the five themes of geography (location, place, human-environment interaction, movement, and region) to study many of the countries in North and South America; with special emphasis placed on the history of the North American countries. Additionally, each day as a class we will view and discuss CNN 10 (formally CNN Student News) to keep up to date with daily current events. Each student will research a global issue and compose a persuasive essay suggesting possible solutions and an action plan to address or inform others about the issue.
English
In sixth grade, the text used is Warriner’s Handbook Introductory Course by Holt. Throughout the year, students will cover the conventions of standard English including superlatives, conjunctions, sentence diagramming, prepositions, nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, direct and indirect objects, and a special emphasis on pronouns. Students will produce various types of writing such as opinion pieces, personal experience essays, short story, tall tales and informative pieces.
Literature
Over the course of sixth grade, we will be using Glencoe’s Literature: The Reader’s Choice book, course 1; as well as The Phantom Tollbooth, The Westing Game, and Al Capone Does My Shirts. This year we will be visiting topics such as the elements of fantasy, historical fiction, mystery, literary devices, and how to analyze a story, poem, or nonfiction text. They will also explore various styles of writing including poetry and creative story telling. Each student also completes six independent reading books and studies.
