The fourth grade program at St. Fabian Catholic School follows the standards of the Archdiocese of Detroit. The program is designed to meet the spiritual, social, emotional, academic and physical needs of the child. Special subjects, such as physical education, Spanish, music, media, computers, and art, are taught by teachers who specialize in those areas.
Religion
In fourth grade, religion is a part of our daily life and is covered in a variety of ways. Students attend weekly Mass and first Friday adoration. The main textbook that is used in fourth grade is RCL Benziger Blest Are We: Faith in Action. We are called to evangelize and be servants of God, and we can do this through our daily actions and by learning through examples in Bible stories and Church history. We study Catholic doctrine as part of our curriculum. We also discuss social justice when we discuss current events. In addition to our text-based learning, students use Pflaum’s Venture Gospel Weekly to discuss the Gospel for the upcoming weekend. This allows the students to learn the lesson in the Gospel prior to attending weekend Mass.
Math
In Math, we cover place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, measurement, graphs, fractions, geometry and decimals. We use EnVision Math 2.0 for daily lessons. In addition to daily lessons, students are quizzed on multiplication facts on a weekly basis.
Science
FOSS is the main source that the elementary school uses for science. This web-based curriculum offers videos and weekly mystery-based activities to teach the science concepts. In fourth grade, the following units of study are covered: rocks and erosion, sound waves and communication, energy and motion, and the human machine (body, senses, and brain).
Social Studies
Fourth grade social studies continues the study of Michigan (1837-present). Fourth graders study government and democracy, economics, maps, Michigan’s resources, geography, and Michigan’s role in the Underground Railroad. We use Oakland School’s MAISA to cover most of the content in social studies and supplement with the Catholic Textbook Project’s Journey Across America.
Language Arts
The main text/series for fourth grade language arts is McGraw-Hill Wonders. Each week, students are introduced to a different genre of reading (narrative, realistic fiction, expository, narrative nonfiction, folktales, drama, poetry, fantasy, biography, and historical fiction). They work with different reading skills and complete grammar review, spelling word work (including weekly spelling tests), and writing activities as they relate to Wonders. In addition to Wonders, students read three novels during the fourth grade: Charlotte’s Web, James and the Giant Peach, and Frindle.
Handwriting
We use the Zaner-Bloser Handwriting Book. This book continues to work on improving manuscript writing. It has easy step-by-step directions. Each lesson has a practice skill, and application skill and then a review of what they have learned. The program teaches students to write fluently and legibly with very few strokes. Students continue to practice improving cursive handwriting.
