The second grade program at St. Fabian Catholic School follows the standards of the Archdiocese of Detroit. The program is designed to meet the spiritual, social, emotional, academic and physical needs of the child. Special subjects, such as physical education, Spanish, music, media, computers, and art, are taught by teachers who specialize in those areas.
Religion
Second grade is an important year for the Catholic faith. We start the year by preparing for Reconciliation, learning about our relationship with God, and reflecting on ourselves as we develop a deeper, closer relationship with our faith. We then move into First Communion preparation. We continue to build our faith as we prepare to take on a bigger role in the Church.
Math
We use the EnVision Math 2.0 curriculum. Over the course of second grade, we strengthen our foundation of addition and subtraction, learn about place value, understand and use data/graphing, use shapes, learn about time and money, measurement, and end the year touching on fractions.
Science
We use the FOSS science curriculum. This program is investigative and exploratory. Over the course of second grade, we cover four science units: animal biodiversity, plant adaptations, erosion and Earth’s surface, and properties and phases of matter. We engage in hands-on experiments weekly.
Social Studies
We use the Oakland Schools MAISA units of study curriculum. Over the course of second grade, we learn more about being citizens of our community, the history of our state, general history and processes of our country, and eventually a look into the world around us.
Language Arts
We use the Wonders curriculum for reading, writing, grammar, and spelling. Over the course of second grade, we are working to improve our writing and speaking skills, working to gain a deeper knowledge of literacy conventions to improve overall reading and comprehension, and lastly making connections with what we read to ourselves, the world, and to other texts.
Handwriting
We use the Zaner-Bloser Handwriting Book. This book continues to work on improving manuscript writing. It has easy step-by-step directions. Each lesson has a practice skill, and application skill and then a review of what they have learned. The program teaches students to write fluently and legibly with very few strokes.
