The first grade program at St. Fabian Catholic School follows the standards of the Archdiocese of Detroit. The program is designed to meet the spiritual, social, emotional, academic and physical needs of the child. Special subjects, such as physical education, Spanish, music, media, computers, and art, are taught by teachers who specialize in those areas.
Religion
In first grade we use a program called Pflaum Gospel Weeklies. This program combines the doctrinal catechesis with the liturgical life of the Church. The first grade uses the Promise booklets, which are consumable each week. They explain the Gospel stories for each Sunday on their level. Each week they have stories activities, and current event topics. The program consists of videos, music seasonal resources, and handouts for families.
As an added resource we also use a book called Catholic Reflections. This is a Catholic curriculum program that prompts and encourages the students to think a little more deeply about their faith. Each unit introduces a theme then a drawing and a writing prompt to go along with it.
Math
In math we use EnVision Math 2.0 program. This program has problem-solving components and helps to develop strategic thinking. It uses a three-method assessment approach: before a lesson, during a lesson, and after the lesson is taught. The units consist of number and number words, addition, subtraction, data and graphs, place value, geometry, money and time, and measurement.
Science
Our science curriculum is FOSS. It’s an inquiry based program that allows children to investigate and explore through hands on learning and the scientific method. It supports Common Core and Next Generation Science. The first-grade lessons are: animals, sun, moon, stars, light, and sound.
Social Studies
In social studies, we use the Oakland Schools MAISA units of study. Some of the areas taught in first grade are: citizenship, maps, responsibility, wants and needs, transportation, and our different cultures. There is also an online component that extends and enriches each unit.
Language Arts
First grade uses the Wonder Reading Program by McGraw-Hill. The program consists of reading, writing, spelling and grammar. It is a high interest literacy program that uses many genres and touches on different cultures. It also allows for differentiated instruction. The program uses many games, videos, and songs to help introduce news skills. Each unit consists of comprehension strategies and skills, vocabulary strategies, fluency, grammar units, and writing practices. In first grade we cover blends, vowels (long and short), nouns, verbs, contractions, ABC order, possessives, adjectives, fiction, and nonfiction.
Handwriting
We use the Zaner-Bloser Handwriting Book. This book is an introduction to manuscript writing. It has easy step-by-step directions. Each lesson has a practice skill, and application skill and then a review of what they have learned. The program teaches students to write fluently and legibly with very few strokes.
