Overview
Welcome to a new year with St. Fabian Youth Group! We invite
any teen in 9th through 12th grade to join us as we begin another
exciting year! Youth Group is made up of over 140 teens from
fourteen different high schools.
Although we are a Catholic Youth Group and teach Catholic
doctrine, we welcome teens of all faiths, and many are represented
in our group. We strive to be truly ecumenical.
Youth Group is a very vital, active group. Be sure to pick up a
calendar when you register and also read the weekly church bulletin
to keep abreast of all that we do.
Our activities are focused into the following four areas:
Mr. Andy Karl
Youth Group Minister
- Educational:
We believe that being Christian is
more than what you learn from a book, it is a way of living.
Teens are encouraged to express that way of life through monthly
education meetings (September through May) retreats, diocesan
and national conferences and peer discussions.
- Liturgical:
What better way to live your faith
than to take an active role in it! Every confirmed teen is
invited to consider becoming trained as a Lector/Commentator, a
Eucharistic Minister, an usher, or to become a member of one of
our vocal choirs or our adult hand bell choir. They are also
given several opportunities throughout the year to be a part of
dramatic gospel readings at our Sunday Liturgies.
- Christian Service:
Opportunities for the teens to live
their Christian faith through service to others are provided
throughout the year. The first Saturday of every month is
"Service Saturday" where the teens devote two hours to
helping fellow parishioners with things such as raking leaves,
shoveling snow, cleaning out gutters, etc. Some of these teens
also visit Alterra Home, a local residence for those struggling
with Alzheimer's. Here they interact with the residents through
games, or dramatic presentations, or simply by listening. Youth
Group teens also prepare food baskets for the hungry, organize
blanket drives for the homeless, and serve meals at soup
kitchens. St. Fabian Youth Group teens are well known for their
willingness to help wherever and whenever needed. One of our
more involved service projects is our annual trip to
"Appalachia." This is where we spend a week of summer
vacation rebuilding and repairing homes for the less fortunate
and elderly. For more information on this, please check out our
"Appalachia" heading.
- Social:
Activities such as camping, skiing,
tobogganing, lock-ins, softball, trips to Cedar Point and
hayrides, provide the teens with a non-threatening, welcoming
atmosphere where they are free to be themselves. Shared events
with other area churches such as "All Night
Happening," picnics and "Late Night Ski", give
the teens a chance to get to know each other.
Youth Group strives to provide opportunities in each of these
four areas once a month throughout the school year. We remain active
throughout the summer with our activities being primarily social.
Please take the time to check out our calendar. You will see for
yourself that the teens of Youth Group are very active.
If you have any questions regarding youth Group, please call Mr.
Karl at (248) 553-4860. We accept registration throughout the
year - it is never too late to join!. The registration fee is $50,
which provides educational materials, supplies, chaperone fees and
snacks.
Again, in the name of Jesus, welcome -- we look forward to
meeting you!
Volunteer
Opportunities
In order to provide nearly 100 events in our ever growing youth
group, we need to ask for specific help from all parents and teens
in order to accomplish our goals. Your support is necessary to
provide adequate coverage in the many activities that help our teens
and this ministry. The workload has been divided into different
areas where adults and teens can serve. All teens and parents are
asked to help with at least one event. Click on a specific job
description below for more information. All files are in pdf format.

What is
Appalachia
"Appalachia" is a name that we have given to our annual
trip to a Christian work camp where we spend a week during the
summer rebuilding and repairing homes for the less fortunate and the
elderly. Over 60 teens and 15 adults are invited to join us on this
trip. The teens earn the right to attend camp through their overall
involvement in the Educational, Service, and Liturgical areas of
Youth Group. We spend many months working together to raise the
necessary funds. Each teen is asked to contribute $120 out of
his/her own pocket, and the remaining $20,000 is raised through
calendar sales, bake sales, flower sales, private donations and
other fund raisers.
