St. Fabian Church is blessed with a loving, generous parish community. For those who are interested in helping, there any ways to share your time, talents, or treasure. Many parish ministries fall under the umbrella of Christian Service. Click on the links below for more information.
Please see our Stewardship page for information on how you can contribute financially to St. Fabian Church and updates on parish initiatives.
Taking Eucharist to the homebound: this ministry allows those who are homebound to receive Communion on a regular basis and lets them know that they are still a vital part of our parish.
Funeral luncheons: this wonderful group of volunteers provides an invaluable service to our parishioners who are suffering the loss of a loved one. They prepare, serve and clean up luncheons that can serve 25 to 200 people.
Housing the Homeless: Each year in early November we offer hospitality to 45-55 guests who have nowhere to call home. We work in conjunction with the Cass Community Center in Detroit. Hundreds of volunteers are needed each year to make this week a warm and welcoming one for our guests.
Soup Kitchens: St. Fabian serves at two area soup kitchens. One group prepares and serves food at St. Christine’s 6 times each year, and other groups serve at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit, or COTS (Coalition On Temporary Shelter), also in Detroit. Sign up in the church vestibule to volunteer at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen or COTS. Please contact Maryann Valade at 248-225-5970 or firstname.lastname@example.org to volunteer at St. Christine’s. We also accept donations of non-perishable food for St. Christine’s on an on-going basis in the vestibule of church. Look for the box marked St. Christine’s.
Alternative Christmas Fair (ACF): St. Fabian assists Hope Lutheran Church (located on 12 Mile Road just east of Haggerty) with this holiday fair where more than 50 charities set up tables and sell unique gifts. ALL profits go directly to the charities.
Prayer Shawl Ministry: this group of volunteers knits/crochets shawls for parish members who are seriously ill, going through chemo, etc. We also make stoles for the RCIA people being Confirmed, caps/booties for preemies and slippers for the homeless. We meet at 10:00am on the 3rd Monday of each month in the Social Hall.
Quilters Group: this group gathers every Tuesday morning at church and creates beautifully handmade lap quilts that are given as gifts to the families our Youth Group serves on the annual Mission Trip. They are also given to recipients of Meals on Wheels, nursing home residents–anyone who needs one.
Rebuilding Together: RT is a national organization that works with city governments to identify families in need of assistance with home repair. There is one team from St. Fabian that is a combined effort between the parish and the Knights of Columbus. Volunteers commit to working one Saturday in late April or early May, from 8am until 5pm doing anything from painting, plumbing, roofing, gardening, laying floors, etc.–whatever is needed to improve the home we are assigned. Funding is provided by donations from the parishes involved (including St. Fabian), local building supply stores and National Rebuilding Together.
If you would like to become involved in any of these very worthwhile efforts, please call Sue Crudgington, Christian Service Coordinator at 248-553-4610 for more information.
