RELIGIOUS FORMATION
Mission
|
The St. Fabian Religious Formation Program strives to address the
faith needs of young and developing children in pre-school through
eighth grade. Our catechetical programs integrate the proclamation
of Christ’s Gospel message, the nurturing of community,
opportunities for worship and prayer, and the motivation for
service. Children are properly catechized for the Sacraments of
Reconciliation and First Eucharist in the second grade, and for
Confirmation in the eighth grade. We strongly recommend a two year
preparation before reception of the Sacraments.

Children's
Liturgy of the Word
Children's Liturgy of the Word takes place on Sunday during the 9:30
a.m. Mass. It does
not meet during the summer months (June-July-August).
Children's Liturgy of the Word is open to all children from
preschool through second grade. this includes children involved with
religious formation, St. Fabian School, and visitors. Registration
is not required.
During Mass, the children are invited to move from the church
before the First Scripture reading and gather in the Social Hall.
The children will then return to Mass during the Prayers of the
Faithful.
What Occurs During Children's Liturgy of the Word?
The Scripture reading is presented to the children at an age
appropriate level, along with an interactive homily. The homily is
based on the readings (and relevant to the lives and experiences of
young children) and is presented in a question and answer format. A
handout is usually distributed at the end of the session to be
colored at home. As a parent, you can ask your child what he/she
talked about or listened to at children's liturgy. The handout can
be a useful trigger.
Parents are welcome to attend with your child(ren). Sometimes
children need to have the comfort of a parent for the first few
times.

Preschool /
Kindergarten Program
Both the Preschool and Kindergarten Religious Formation classes use
the I Am Special program. Classes meet from September through
April during the 9:30 a.m. Mass on the first and third Sunday of
each month so the children will still have exposure to the Mass
environment.. Registration is mandatory.
The I Am Special program is based on the belief that young
children need to develop positive self-concepts. Children need to
feel good about themselves in order to love others as themselves.
I Am Special aims to provide a foundation upon which
future religious education can be built. There is a cautious attempt
to refrain from teaching too much, too soon, recognizing that our
religious education is an on-going experience as we grow in God's
love. But instead provides religious learning experiences at the
young child's level of understanding.
Program Objectives:
- To develop positive attitudes about themselves, their family,
and friends by discovering and learning more about the many
gifts, talents, and abilities that God has provided.
- To increase their knowledge and participation in the Church's
liturgical seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter.
- To increase the children's knowledge and practice of Christian
actions toward others such as taking turns, listening, helping,
caring, sharing, loving, and thanking others.
- To increase the children's appreciation and celebration of
God's love and goodness through Scripture, music and prayer.
Topics covered in Preschool:
- My name, smile, hands, voice are special.
