Faith
Formation
|
St. Fabian School is a Catholic school that
reflects the spirit of Catholic life and learning. St.
Fabian offers students a complete program of spiritual
activities. Catholic doctrine is presented at each grade in
a relevant and meaningful manner. The Catholic faith is
celebrated through regular prayer services, the weekly
celebration of the Eucharist, and Holy Day liturgies.
Parents are always welcome to join the school community in
prayer.
In all spiritual activities, the school
recognizes that parents play the primary role in the moral
and spiritual training of the child. The example of the
parents is the key factor for the spiritual development of
the child. It is expected that parents and children attend
weekly Sunday liturgy and participate in parish life.
St. Fabian provides opportunities for
students to prepare for and receive the Sacraments of the
Holy Eucharist, Reconciliation, and Confirmation within the
Catholic community of prayer and worship. The sacraments of
Reconciliation and Eucharist are ordinarily received in the
2nd grade. The sacrament of Confirmation is celebrated in
the spring of 8th grade. Preparation for the celebration of
these sacraments is a joint effort of parents and religious
education staff. Instruction is provided in the school
classroom setting. Periodic meetings and activities are
scheduled throughout the year.

Attendance
| Punctual and regular attendance is important
for consistent academic progress. A report card will be
withheld from a student who has been absent for twelve or
more days in any one quarter. Absenteeism in excess of 16%
of the school year's 180 days may jeopardize student
promotion.
All absences should be reported to the school office by
telephone. Calls are to be made before 8:30 am. If the
absence is not reported, the home of the absent child will
be called to verify the reason for the absence. A dated note
of excuse must also be presented to the student's homeroom
teacher on the day of return. Any student who has an excused
absence may receive credit for made-up assignments.

Closing Procedures
| In the event of inclement weather, St. Fabian
School will adhere to the decision of the Farmington
Schools. If, however, the school is forced to close for some
reason which would not affect the public schools, it will be
announced on one of the following radio stations: WJR or WWJ.
By listening to one of these stations, or by watching FOX
(Channel 2), WDIV (Channel 4), or WXYZ (Channel 7), parents
will be informed more promptly than by trying to contact the
school.
In conjunction with WWJ Newsradio, you can log on to the
school closing network program at www.schoolclosed.com.
At this site, you can also register to receive an e-mail
alert when school is closed. Click on the link above for
more information.

Homework
| Each teacher established his/her own daily or
weekly homework requirements. Homework is assigned to
reinforce concepts taught in a particular class. It also
enables the student to form independent study habits. It may
consist of special written assignments as well as on going
reading, studying, long-range research projects, or
memorization.
Homework may be assigned on weekends when the teacher
feels it is necessary. Weekends may also be used for
completion of make-up work or working on long-range
projects.
St. Fabian students receive homework appropriate to their
grade level. The same guidelines established for "classwork"
will apply to homework.
Late assignments NEED not be accepted (except for excused
absences). Individual teacher policies regarding late
assignments are distributed at the beginning of the year at
Parent Night.

All
School and Special Liturgy/Prayer Services
| Each Friday during the school year, students
attend the 8:30am Mass. All readings are done by an assigned
class and the children sing the songs they have learned in
music class. All parents are encouraged to attend. Each
grade level also plans and participates in a special liturgy
or prayer service appropriate for their age. For example,
the 3rd graders recite the Living Rosary, the 5th graders
enact the Stations of the Cross, and the 8th graders honor
Mary with a May Crowning. All of these religious activities
take place before the full student body and parents. |

Music
| The students in Grade K-5 participate in
Music class each week. They learn spiritual songs, which are
sung at the Friday mass, and learn basic music theory
depending on the grade level. At Christmas, students in
Grades K-5 come together to perform songs of the season.
The Music Minister also directs a Middle School Musical
in the Spring. Students are invited to tryout for the
roles in January and the production commences in May.
Past productions include Annie Jr., Music Man Jr., Fiddler
on the Roof and Honk Jr.

Library
Program
The mission of St. Fabian’s library media program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. In keeping with the school Mission Statement, our Philosophy, and strong desire to provide an environment in which Christ and Catholic values and morals are the center, the library mission is accomplished:
- by providing intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats,
- by providing instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and using information and ideas, and
- by working with other educators to design learning strategies to meet the needs of individual students.
--Information Power: Guidelines for School Library Media Programs (1988), p.1
St. Fabian’s library media center is a dynamic and user-friendly place. Students use the library for instruction, research, homework, both individual and group study, checking out/returning materials, leisure reading, and computer work. Elementary students visit once a week and return their materials the next week. Middle school students visit the library every other week through their literature classes returning materials on their next visit. All students are welcome to “stop in” with permission from their teachers. Fines are .05 / day. Materials must be returned and all fines paid before students may check out again. Accelerated Reader is a big part of the Library experience for 3rd and 4th grades with an introduction to 2nd grade the last marking period of the year.
The library maintains over 13,000 print materials, CD-ROMs, the Internet, and Internet-based databases selected specifically to fill the academic and leisure reading needs of students and faculty. Additionally, the library media center houses a network of five fully automated Internet accessible computers which allows access to World Book Online, United Steaming, Enchanted Learning, and the AccessMichigan databases (including Electric Library, FirstSearch, InfoTrac, Kids InfoBits, SIRS Discoverer, and more). Sagebrush Corporation Spectrum software drives the automation system and there is filtering/monitoring software for the Internet.

Art Program
| The Art Program is designed to
provide the highest quality in art education. This program
includes instruction in many mediums. Students also discover
many interesting facts about other cultures and ethnic
groups by studying art history and learn from great artists
of the past and present. Students create their own art
masterpieces using paint, water colors, chalk, paper mache,
oil pastels, markers and many other exciting mediums. Skills
are developed that will serve as a basis for lifetime
appreciation of and participating in the visual arts.
Because many of the art projects students work on require
more than one class period, your child will not be bringing
home a finished art project every week. |

Computer
Education
| Students are instructed on top of the line
Dell computers that are equipped with the Windows XP operating system and the Microsoft Office 2000 Profession
package. Students use programs such as Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, Inspiration, Kidspiration, Take it to the
computer (K,1,2), Mavis Beacon Typing, Publisher and KidPix
as well as many other education-based programs to complete assignments.
Internet accessibility is available for the students
after signing the Archdioceses acceptable use policy. Symantec
web security is the filtering software that is
used.
Students in grades 3 through 8 are given approximately ten
minutes of keyboarding instruction per class period. Proper
hand positioning and posture are strongly encouraged. It is
the goal of St. Fabian School that at the completion of
eighth grade, 90% of our student body will be able to type
correctly.

Parent
Involvement Program (PIP)
| Parent involvement is the participation of
parents in every facet of the education and development of
children from birth to adulthood; recognizing that parents
are the primary influence in their children's lives.
St. Fabian School incorporates the Parent Involvement
Program (PIP) with the objectives of involving
parents/guardians of all students enrolled in grades K-8 to
support and enrich the schools' educational and
extra-curricular activities.
It is mandatory for St. Fabian families to complete a
minimum of 30 hours (15 per semester) of parent involvement per year in one or
more of the schools activities. For families unable to
fulfill the time required, a fee per hour system has been
devised. This enables each family to contribute in an
integral and valuable manner. Involved parents bridge the
link between teachers and students and provide vitality and
new ideas to the school. In addition, parent involvement
allows St. Fabian's tuition to remain low by avoiding
additional salaries.
Each family is responsible to track, input, and review their own PIP hours. Coordinators and timekeepers will not do this task for you. We strongly recommend that you input your hours into the system as soon you complete them.

on the parking lot.
Parents provide lunch supervision and are assigned
cafeteria and playground duty every day. It is our
responsibility to provide the children of St. Fabian an
enjoyable and safe lunchtime experience.

Catholic
Schools Week
| In January, Catholic schools across the
nation devote an entire week to celebrate their valuable
contributions to the American society. Catholic Schools Week
is our opportunity to bring home to our community the
message and theme of Catholic Schools Week.
Through our observance, we can appreciate how a Catholic
school education enriches the lives of our students and
their families. An open house is scheduled during this week.
This is our opportunity to remind you of the rich,
multi-faceted education students enjoy. In addition,
Catholic Schools Week demonstrates how our programs produce
individuals who are prepared, both academically and
spiritually, to have a positive impact on the lives of
others.

Field
Day
| Every May, the school children enjoy fun and
challenging outdoor activities. There are games as simple as
kick the shoe, relay races, and water balloon toss, to the
more challenging kickball and volleyball games and the
obstacle course. Afterwards, the kids enjoy a picnic lunch,
treats, and some entertainment, such as Frisbee
demonstrations or the "bat" lady.
Field Day also gives the parents an opportunity to become
involved. The success of this program is due to the parents,
who make up a 70 person work force, necessary to make this
the favorable day it has been!

Spirit
Day
| On the second Wednesday of the month, the
children are allowed to come out of uniform. Each child
donates one dollar to do this and the monies collected are
used for enrichment assemblies held throughout the year.
Some of the programs Spirit Day has funded are: Mr. Wizard,
First Ladies, Living Science, Meet Abe Lincoln, The
Body Shoppe and various inspirational speakers. |
