ST. FABIAN SCHOOL Music Curriculum

The Elementary Music program recognizes that music is a unique language for communicating ideas, feelings, and different ways of knowing about oneself and the world. Music engages the whole individual in the acts of creating and performing, and involves the intellectual, the intuitive, the emotional, and the physical being. Music helps develop teamwork, collaboration, flexibility, appreciation, and respect for others' ideas and personal expressions. Music's richness and its contribution to thinking and learning makes it an essential part of the human experience. The St. Fabian music curriculum, using the National, State, and Archdiocesan standards, strives to develop the whole child by focusing on three standard areas:

PERFORMING: Applying skills and knowledge to performing music. This includes developing and maintaining a repertoire for our liturgical celebrations including songs for Friday Mass, settings of the Ordinary and all acclamations, and songs for extraordinary liturgies such as May Crowning and Living Rosary. All children also prepare for and perform in our annual Christmas Concert.

CREATING: Applying skills and knowledge to creating music. This includes note reading, identifying basic dynamic and tempo indications, and basic music terminology.

ANALYZING IN CONTEXT: Analyzing, describing, and evaluating works of music.

Using accepted performance standards in a graded format, each student will be given the opportunity to experience music emotionally and intellectually, to perform and create different types and styles of music, and to understand its structure and meaning. We believe that a comprehensive approach to music education is essential to the development of the whole child.

We believe that a comprehensive approach to music education is essential to the development of the whole child.
