Destination Imagination (DI)

This school year marks the 18th year that DI is being offered at St. Fabian School. DI is a problem solving competition which fosters creativity, teamwork and cooperation, and a multitude of skills.  It is offered for the Kindergarten through 8th grade with parents as team leaders.

Creative problem solving while developing solutions to an DI problem. It encourages divergent thinking through team work. Groups of 5-7 students are formed according to grade level. There is a choice of six different problems from theatrical performances to construction of vehicles, props, et. Groups meet once a week through February, when they go into a series of competitions with local schools, nearby school districts, state, and nationals. One of the competitions is spontaneous, encouraging "thinking-on-your-feet" problem solving such as "Name something Red." A common response could be "an apple," a creative response would be "Snow White's poisoned apple." Points are awarded for creativity.  Destination Imagination is a students "hands-on", adults "hands-off" activity.

Boy Scouts

To many elementary school boys between the grades of 1 through 5, Cub Scouting plays an integral and vital part of their lives. At St. Fabian, this statement is never truer. From visits to nature centers to learning how buildings are constructed to building cars and racing boats to holding snakes and seeing alligators, our Cub Scouts obtain a wealth of knowledge without realizing that they are learning. this is accomplished by putting an element of fun into every project they participate in. Each week, den leaders devise activities for the Cub Scouts to perform which will enable them to earn patches as they work toward the badge for their levels. The scouts are carefully guided through and instructed on the safe use of tools which enable them to construct different projects. Scouts learn about first aid and the importance of keeping a strong body. Boys sometimes have their first camping experiences, which is often continued even after leaving the scouting program, through Cub Scouting. Cub Scouts learn how important God and country is in their lives. Moreover, they learn the value of respect for their families sand each other. With participation from parents and fellow cub scouts, our boys learn the value of independence as well as team work. The morals, values, and skills obtained in scouting follows the scouts from childhood to manhood. For many, it's a lifelong love which is passed from generation to generation. The memories are fond, the experiences are lifelong.

Battle of the Books

In conjunction with the Farmington Public Library, middle school students are given the opportunity to compete in the Battle of the Books, beginning in January. Teams are formed and students must read ten books that have been selected by the library staff. For the Battle, questions are asked that require the students to read each book very carefully and to pay close attention to detail. Semi-final competitions are held in April at each middle school and the top scoring 60 teams from all of the Farmington area schools come together for the finals held in May.

Middle School Musical

Each year, the St. Fabian Student Theatre presents a musical. The cast usually consists of over 50 middle school students who have committed to a challenging four month rehearsal process which culminates in performances for three days in May. In addition to the large cast, approximately 25 students work behind the scenes to build and paint sets, help back stage, and usher at performances. This experience is not just an opportunity for these gifted students to perform, but is also a chance for them to learn discipline, teamwork, respect for others, and the satisfaction of pursuing a common creative goal. The musical for the 2007/08 will be Suessical.

National Junior Honor Society

The National Junior High Society (NJHS) of St. Fabian School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in five areas of evaluation: scholarship, leadership, service, character, and citizenship. Standards of selection are published by NJHS and have been revised to meet our chapter needs. Students are selected to be members by a five-member faculty council, appointed by the principal, which bestows this honor upon qualified students on behalf of the faculty of our school each year. Students who have attended St. Fabian for a full semester and are either second semester sixth graders, seventh or eighth graders are eligible for membership. For the scholarship criterion, a student must have a cumulate grade of 90% or better. A history of leadership experiences and participation in school or community service is required. Following notification, a formal induction ceremony is held at the school to recognize all the newly selected members. Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all five criteria that led to their selection. This obligation includes regular attendance at chapter meetings held monthly during the school year, and participation in the chapter service project(s).
