In an effort to make the safety of children a priority, the Archdiocese of Detroit has implemented programs for its volunteers. There are two programs, one for those 18 years and older and a separate program for teens in grades 9-12. Protecting God’s Children is for those adults 18 and older who are volunteering and Called to Serve for those teen volunteers in grades 9-12.

Protecting God’s Children

For adults 18 and older, the first part of the program includes a policy that those who minister to children, the elderly, or persons with disabilities shall have a criminal background check. The second part of the program mandates that all staff and volunteers who work with children must attend a Protecting God’s Children workshop. The workshops are offered throughout the year and in a variety of locales throughout the archdiocese.

The background check forms are available in the Religious Formation Office or online and can be returned to the Religious Formation or School Office.

To locate and register for a Protecting God’s Children workshop, go online to www.virtusonline.org. You must register online. Once you have completed the workshop, please make sure you turn a copy of your certificate to the Christian Formation Office.

Called To Serve

For teens in grades 9-12, the first part of the program includes a policy that those teens who minister to children, the elderly, or persons with disabilities fill out a Background Certification form. The second part of the program mandates that all teen staff and volunteers who work with children must attend a Called to Serve workshop. The workshops are offered throughout the year and in a variety of locations throughout the archdiocese.

The Background Certification form is available in the Religious Formation Office or online and can be returned to the Religious Formation Office. Once the teen reaches 18 years of age, adult guidelines and policies kick in.
