St. Fabian Catholic School
K-8 Spanish Program Curriculum
Implemented 2009-2010
Teacher: Mrs. Di Ponio

Our curriculum is based off of the Michigan Department of Education’s Standards and Benchmarks for World Languages.  It is our effort to keep our program aligned with these expectations.

Vision:
The goal of St. Fabian’s Spanish Program is to expose students to the wonder and necessity of a second language and cultures different than their own, in efforts to open their eyes to the increasingly diverse and global community that exists beyond our school walls.

Goals:
Students have Spanish one time a week; therefore we are not expecting our students to achieve fluency.  Our goal is that students in Grades K-5 reach the Novice Mid level by the end of 5th grade and students in Middle School reach the Novice High level by the end of 8th grade.  These levels are described by the Proficiency Guidelines of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.  Students will also be exposed to the many aspects cultures of the Spanish-speaking population and are expected to learn appreciation of the differences among the people of the world.

Grade Level Curriculum Breakdown:
We have divided the standards and the contexts in which they are to be taught into the various grade levels.  They are also divided by the five strands the Michigan Department of Education has defined: communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities.  Details of these individual strands can be found on the Michigan Department of Education’s website.  Students will achieve proficiency in the indicated areas by listening, reading, speaking, and writing.  We are aiming for students to achieve proficiency in the standards and benchmarks that are at the Novice level.  Due to the infrequency of Spanish instruction, these are the most realistic standards and benchmarks for our students.
An (*) indicates an area of context or standard that students worked on in the previous grade and will continue to work on in the grade indicated.  Highlighted areas indicate an area of context or standard that is new to students in the grade indicated.
In addition to the standards below, at least 5 minutes of every class will be spent exploring the culture of Spanish-speaking countries.  There will be many classes in which more than 5 minutes will be spent studying cultural aspects of those who speak the language, but 5 minutes per class is the minimum amount of time to be spent each time class meets.  The information to be covered during this time is defined in the standards below.
